Coffee is a big part of our mornings -- and afternoons, evenings, and any time in between. Many of us enjoy it with breakfast, or as a midday jolt to get us through the work day. Hot or iced, it’s one of America’s most popular beverages.

Over the years, coffee has gotten a bad rap for potentially causing heart disease and even cancer, but recent studies suggest coffee has more health benefits than risks. It’s even being taken off the World Health Organization’s (WHO) possible carcinogen list.

Whether you were concerned about coffee raising your blood pressure, stunting your growth, or shortening your lifespan (or if you just love coffee like we do), the findings of these studies will be good news to you.

Health benefits of coffee

Not only is coffee not as bad for you as once believed; it can actually be good for you! If you take your coffee black, you’re getting some positive health benefits with your cup of joe.

It can fight depression.

A 2011 study by Harvard showed that women who drank more than four cups of coffee per day had a 20 percent decreased chance of developing depression, a mental illness that affects more than 4 percent of the United States population. Perhaps it has something to do with the next benefit of coffee...

It’s packed with nutrients.

Vitamins B2, B5, B3, manganese, and potassium are all found in coffee. In fact, a single cup of coffee contains 11 percent of your daily suggested intake of B2, or riboflavin. All these nutrients are necessary for your body’s functions, from your nervous system to your energy production. In fact, with all those B vitamins, it’s no wonder that coffee can help with the next reason you might want to start drinking it!

It can help burn fat.

Between the B vitamins, which are essential in helping you break down fat, protein, and carbohydrates, and the caffeine in coffee, you could burn a bit of fat. Caffeine helps increase your metabolic rate by up to 11 percent.

It may ward off certain diseases.

Coffee may have the power to help prevent certain cancers (liver, uterine, and colorectal), type-2 diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, gout, cardiovascular disease, and cirrhosis. That’s a lot of reasons to drink to your health.

It boosts your brain power.

Caffeine has the power to help you focus, which might be why we tend to grab a cup of coffee first thing in the morning. The caffeine in coffee travels through your bloodstream and to your brain quickly, essentially powering up your neurons. You might find you have faster reaction times, better memory, more energy, and overall better focus.
