October is a great month to spend participating in festive autumn activities, from apple-picking and pumpkin-carving to baking delicious fall treats. However, we can’t forget the most exciting event of all: celebrating Halloween!

If you have trick-or-treaters at home, the Minneapolis area offers tons of opportunities to get their sugar fix (and have some Halloween fun!) well before the 31st. If you’re looking to expand this year’s candy route beyond your own block, put on a costume, gather up the kids, and head on out to one of these trick-or-treating events in our area:

1. Half-Haunted Halloween

If your kids are a bit younger (or you’re easily startled!), take your family to this non-scary, family-friendly annual event at Wood Lake Nature Center. From game stations and storytelling to trick-or-treating and barn dancing, you and your loved ones will have a blast celebrating the season. Be sure to enjoy some fresh hot cocoa and delicious cookies throughout the night.

Date: Saturday, October 19
Time: 2 p.m. - 6 p.m.
Location: Wood Lake Nature Center
Price: $5 per person (free for members)

2. Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular

Straw mazes, costume characters, carousel rides -- oh my! Gather your family for a Halloween celebration at the Minnesota Zoo. For children of any age, this seasonal event aims to delight rather than frighten.

Be sure to stroll down the Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular Trail to witness over 5,000 illuminated pumpkins creatively carved and displayed from ground to tree-top. Think: Christmas light display, Halloween edition.

Dates: Tuesday, October 1 through Sunday, November 3
Times: Sunday - Thursday, 7 p.m. - 10 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, 7 p.m - 11 p.m. (October 16 and 17, 7 p.m. - 11 p.m.)
